I think the way Gmail handles threading and subjects is the right way to
handle this. Make the users click on a "change the subject" button in order
to change the subject. If they intentionally click that button than they
intentionally want to break threading.


and while we're on the subject of Gmail, the way that Gmail handles replies
to your own sent mail is clearly the right way to handle it, i'm surprised
that nobody else does it this way. For those of you who don't use the Gmail
web interface, here's how it works:

I send an email to [email protected].
I select this email in my Sent box and hit reply.
A new message is created with [email protected] as the recipient and my
original email quoted below.
