It's a nice idea, but unfortunately "(was blah blah)" is a totally informal standard. What if someone doesn't include the parentheses? What now? I think the best Letters can offer consistently is a break/keep thread option, and some kind of (configurable) warning or automatic setting of that option when the subject changes. This will already be better than 99% of the mail clients out there.
The other problem as I pointed out is that mucking around with subjects too much destroys Gmail threading. And Gmail threading is what most people are familiar with when it comes to threading.
