I can, but I won't right now, sorry. I trust you on that one, will save
your suggestions for a later headache.
I'll post an update when I bang my head on that myself, unless someone
finds out before. Maybe you should switch to the AppleScript list, some
smart people live there, including our own Michelle Steiner.

I thought of that too but didn't find that menu item, probably because I
looked in CE 2.0v1. I learned Emailer's menu scripting recently (had some
hard time finding items in submenus, finally used brute force: dumped all
menus and items references, all menus and items names, then compared the
lists). What I wanted was to improve the "About the Applescript Menu"
script to allow opening the scripts folder from within Emailer. I did,
burned a few brain cells in the process though ;) The trick is to ask
Emailer to open the Emailer Files folder, then ask Finder to open the
Applescript folder of the resulting front window.

I'm afraid the problem lies in the reference, not the "open" command
itself, so it will be the same for selections: the script has to be
called by Emailer (another occasion for a 2-scripts trick?) This only
works from inside Emailer (assuming the front window is a message browser
and there is a message id 12389):
set the selection of the front window to {message id 12389}
I wouldn't be surprised if it was related to the fact that a message is
{message id 12389} inside Emailer, but {message id 12389 of application
"Claris Emailer"} from outside.
** BEWARE when editing/testing Emailer scripts under OS X **
You probably noticed the bug that crashes the calling app when you call a
script while it's open in an editor.
What's worse is that you can open it simultaneously in more than one
editor which is a bit stupid and dangerous since both versions will go
out of sync when edited, and run them from there, but you can't run the
compiled script file at the same time (which is OK under OS 9, I do that
all the time). Probably a bug in AppleScript. Worth a bug report (I never
tried to file a bug report to Apple, how's that done?)
I use OSA Menu to add new scripts and test them fast from kb shortcuts
without relaunching Emailer, so I shoot my foot daily with that one: I
quit my apps with all sorts of kb shortcuts when I forget to close the
script files ;)
Before OSA Menu I kept a dummy "Test" script in Emailer's scripts to edit
new scripts there without relaunching Emailer.
