On or about 2/9/03 10:43 AM Bill McIntyre AKA [EMAIL PROTECTED] eruditely mused the following:
>After getting all these informative replies, it seems to me that there >are two big factors to be considered in deciding whether its worth it to >set up all these mail actions, enter addresses of students in address >books, and other measures to control spam. The most important is the >amount of spam you get, and I just don't get enough to justify much >effort to control it. > Then you are lucky and perhaps don't need to implement any of the suggestions made on this list. I for one know that without Mail Actions set up, IMHO I would not cope with the spam as easily as I do. How about this idea for your classes? Set up a Classes Group in your Address Book and set up a Mail Action to look for subject contains say "French101" or "McIntyre Class" (whatever you like). Also set up a Class Folder. This Mail Action should add their email to the group BUT filter their mail directly to the Deleted Folder. At the beginning of each three week class you tell all the students to send you ONE email with the subject line defined by you. Make a second Mail Action to deal with the new incoming mail from them. If their address is in the Classes Group, filter mail to Classes Folder and when the late submissions come in, your Class Folder will be bold with contents. You will not lose them because they are mixed up with the spam, or potential spam. Do it once, forget about it and YOU don't have to add their email. They do it themselves. >At the margins, if I did get a bit more, it seems to me that a lot >depends on whether or not I want the illusion of control- whether I >prefer to scan a suspected spam folder for exceptions rather than scan my >inbox for exceptions. Either way, I have to look at all my mail if I >don't want to risk losing a good one. I guess it depends on how our >brains are wired. Maybe I'll change my mind when and if I ever start >getting large amounts of spam so that I can truly appreciate the problem. If you did start to get more spam, your student will look after themselves and you can then add a Spam Mail Action or ever use some of the ones already written by others. Some are still on the FogCity web site but I think there are others around if you need them. As with everything else in life you have to make the choice you consider suits you best for the circumstances YOU are in. Would you really like me to distribute your unlisted telephone number? Basically it's the same thing and increases the Spam we all get.
