What I have done the last 3 years or so is to 'reset'
about every six months. With a little Res Edit work
and a bit of home brewed playing I get around that
problem. Its becoming my personal New Years Eve
'tradition' to "purge" my email. Then I do it again
usually once during the year. So far, that means July
4th weekend. Here's the SHORT version without details.
Step 1: Create duplicate of your entire email folder.
Step 2: Use Res Edit to change the name of the prefs
file that the new copy will run from
Step 3: Trash entire mail archives of the new folder
so that it will create all new archives. It
shouldn't need so much time to start and / or
shut down each time.
Step 4: The OLD ... ORIGINAL files become the ARCHIVE
before your 'cut off date'. You can still
access them, you just don't need to do it every
single time you start up your machine / email.
It seems to me that every single mail saved causes the
index to have to keep track of all that 'stuff'. Thus,
the more 'stuff' the more 'time' to keep it sorted.
Now if it takes 3 minutes to open the "2005 Second Half"
archive you won't care as much since you don't need to
open it as often.
I open emailer as a start up item. My archive copy (of
2005 second half) is still available, and NOT being
started up as a habit so time problem is thus resolved.
By the way, if you don't know how to do the Res Edit
thing... here's the LONG version:
Step 1: Drag and drop your fresh COPY of eMailer onto
Res Edit.
Step 2: When its done opening, doubleclick the "Str#
Resource.
Step 3: Doubleclick the 501 resource from the list.
Step 4: scroll down the resulting list of items listed
to item #8. Here is the name of your prefs
file.
Step 5: Name the prefs file "CE Jan 2006 Prefs"
Step 6: COPY the text you just typed.
Step 7: Save changes and close the file till all the
windows are gone. Then Quit Res Edit.
Step 8: Open your Claris Folder and find your original
prefs file that you've used up till today.
Step 9: DUPLICATE the original prefs file and then
rename the copy by PASTE of your text from
the prefs file. (MUST be a perfect match to
restore your current preferences)
Step 10: Start up your OLD copy of emailer and all your
original info should still be there.
Step 11: Start up your NEW copy, and all your original
info will still be there too.
Step 12: DELETE all the mails from the folders of your
new copy since you can see and prove that the
old copy and its mail are still there available.
Step 13: If you wish, BEFORE you start to use your new
emptied out copy, DUPLICATE IT TOO... and archive
it for use in six months. Then you won't have to
Go through all this again.
Good Luck
Don
