I gave them my old iMac G3 for $100 when I bought the G5. The Mac store transferred all the contents of the old one to the new one, so I knew it was there and I opened some things that were important to me, but even if they do the transfer for me again, I think I'll hang on to my wife's old G3.
Do the rebuild on the old computer, or on your PPC based iMac G5, then move the files back to the Intel one and try again.
