I may be wrong but I think what Tannis is referring to is the fact that Mail.app and Gyazmail include a copy of the attachment in the message where as CE simply lists the name of the attachment sent but does not add a copy to the message in the database. I'm not positive, but I think that is how it works. Including an attachment copy in the message can take up a lot of disk space. I think the way CE works is better except that it is easier to lose the connection between the message and the attachment.

At this point I've become lost on if Tannis meant during composition or during viewing of a received message. But in either case, the result is the same, the attachments are shown in the body of the email. At least in Mail, if the message came in as plain text, it usually does not "display" the attachment if it is something that can be rendered (ie: if it is a JPEG or PDF or whatever, it usually doesn't render the image, rather just leaves an icon at the bottom of the body for the attachment) I can't speak for GyzaMail as I only used it for a very short period of time.

Also you are correct that Mail holds the raw encoded attachment as part of the email message, unlike Emailer that removes it and saves it as a file. I'm actually up in the air if I like this or not. I do like it in that it makes it much MUCH easier to keep track of the attachments with the email for something that you want to keep long term. It also makes it exceptionally simple to throw out attachments for emails you don't want. I never have to root thru my downloads folder throwing out al the GIF files from spam any more.

The downside is, it does increase the saved size of the email, which in turn increases the size of the mail database. Often, if the attachment is something I need to keep, then I usually need to keep it somewhere other than in my mail database (ie: it is a job related file, and should be stored with all the other files for the job). That means I get stuck essentially keeping two copies, one with the email that I may need or want to keep, and one with the job files where the attachment belongs. This wasn't an issue with Emailer, I could safely just move the attachment and only keep the one copy.

As soon as I get around to finding or writing a script that lets me save a group of email messages out of Mail as text files, then maybe my opinion on keeping the attachments with the email will change (usually the situation in which I don't like keeping the double versions is due to job related emails, which under Emailer, when a job wrapped, I would save out all the related emails as a text file, and stick them with the job files for archiving, and then purge those emails from my database... I'd like to do the same under Mail, at which time, I probably won't care about the doubling of the attachments, as they will no longer be in my mail database.... I just don't have a script or tool yet to save out a group of emails to text).
