Hi again Listers,
Now that I don't have to use the goshdarn webmailer at least, now I
hope to try to fix my CE, and I can address all the comments and
questions that came in from you folks. So, here we go, one by one.
Marc Casteels wrote,
<- You might check if the Firewall in Mac OS X is disabled.
At least for a few minutes test, I suggest you disable is.>
Firewall was "disabled," because I never turned it on in the first
place. But yeah, I checked anyway. It's off.
<- Can you webmail at THE SAME computer as where CE resides.>
Yes, that's how my original cry for help to this list was issued. I
had to use my ISP's webmailer at home because my CE wouldn't work,
and I never configured Mail.app when I originally got OS X. But, I am
able to send and receive email from any computer, including my own,
on the ISP's webmailer. I just hate using it though because (a) I'm
on dialup, and (b) I like to keep my correspondence permanently, on
the privacy of my own hard drive.
<- So, do you have connection ? Can you open terminal and PING
194.7.1.4 ?>
I know what Terminal is and how to open it, but I don't know what
PING 194.7.1.4 is. However, if you mean, do I have an Internet
connection, the answer is definitely yes.
<- Is it possible that your ISP following a merger maybe changed some
brandnames, and went to change the name of a popserver ?>
I spent almost an hour last night on my ISP's tech support chat, then
another hour and a half on the phone with them and then back in their
support chat when I got home from work today. As soon as I got done
telling them my problem, I asked them specifically if they had
recently "done anything" to the mailserver in the last few days, and
they said no. Then we went over my configurations for each of my two
email addresses, and they thought the problem was with how I'd
configured my incoming and outgoing server. (I should also mention,
they'd never even HEARD of CE!) Well, OK, and I tried the new configs
they gave me, but that didn't fix it, and my "old" configs -- the
very same ones I've had since they last modified things a couple of
years ago -- are what I'm using right now on Mail.app! (They don't
know THAT yet, though.) On Mail.app, I've both picked up my email and
sent out my test mail to this list, and received that back since I'm
a list member here. So, this is a CE problem, not an ISP problem.
<- Can you separate the problem into incoming mail and outgoing mail ?
If you disable GET MAIL, then can you test and positively SEND a test
mail out ?>
On CE, I am presently totally unable to either receive or send email
of any kind. I tried just getting and just sending, and it wouldn't
send or receive separately either. :-(

<Please dont panic, there will be a simple explanation for this
problem. I just did the latest security update for 10.4.8 and am
replying to this email to test whether it has broken anything for me.
If you receive this I am guessing that the problem is elsewhere.>
Thanks, Neville, but I originally got this email on my ISP's webmailer.
And now, the Great CE God, Chris:
<Actually, the fact that webmail works is almost meaningless to say
the mail server is working correctly. Webmail systems usually use an
entirely different interface to the mail server.>
Wow, thanks for the info -- I didn't know that, and wouldn't have
guessed.
Try two things, 1: ping the mail server (both pop or "incoming" and
smtp) and see if they respond. If they do, 2: telnet to the mail
server and see if it connects.
If you have questions on how to do either, let me know what the pop
(incoming) and smtp addresses are for the server and I can try doing
both from here.>
No, I don't know how to do either, but isn't the fact that Mail.app
works on both send and receive evidence that my ISP's mailserver is
up and running? However, if I'm wrong on that, my incomings and
outgoings are (two: I have two email addresses with my ISP):
Incoming : mail.cybernex.net and mail.nni.com
Outgoings: smtp.mail.nni.com:Yersinia and smtp.mail.nni.com:formaji
<And as Marc already recommended, try sending and receiving
separately so you can isolate if both are down, or just one. Also, do
a full reboot of your computer, and verify if other Classic apps can
get to the internet (is Emailer able to check mail from some other
ISP, or try a web browser in Classic and see if you can get to a web
page).>
Hmmmm, interesting. No I didn't reboot my computer (though I did do
the separate CE send/receive tests Marc suggested, neither worked),
Hmmmmm, CE is the only Classic app I even use on the Internet. When I
first got my G4 (and OS X with it), I had to go download the OS X
versions of my chat clients (IRCle and AIM) because even in Classic
Mode, the earlier ones I had on my OS 9 drive wouldn't work. I use
other Classic apps on that drive (which work fine), just not Internet
ones. The only OS 9-and-under Internet app I use at all is CE. Well,
OK. I'll reboot the Mac and try CE again.
Thanks all!
~Yersinia.
