Here's the odd thing about this Marc - I was able to work as normal after
opening Claris and even in system X - it was just that the icons
disappeared on
start-up.

It turned out that the Alias's were being duplicated tenfold! So I
decided to
trash most of them. As I noted I reduced these rescued files
considerably. I
then shut down last night and this morning turned the computer on with
some
trepidation to see if all was well. Turns out the desktop loaded
normally! with
my folders showing up. One folder seems to have buried itself in the
documents
somewhere but can be found with Spotlight.

I am still hoping someone can tell me if this is a bug of some kind or
whether I
triggered the problem when I began to backup files on a CD-R disk?

I also checked Apple's 'Help' tips on burning CD's and this suggests it
is somewhat tricky.
But whether it triggered the problem or not I don't know! I'll be
interested to hear the
list's thoughts on this and whether anybody else has experienced a
similar problem.
