The setup **seems** simple - System Prefs -> Network - under TCP/ IP, type in the IP address, subnet mask, etc, and it should work. After a lot of go-round with CavTel tech support, they said my ethernet must be faulty, but I tried it on my daughter's eMac and her new MacBook, all with the same (non)result. So, I wonder, could it be the ethernet cord? Or the modem? The phone line is fine, because dial-up still works.

The DSL modem likely has status lights on it. What are they showing (there should be labels with each light). Are you getting a WAN link?

Did they give you a static IP address or dynamic. If dynamic, are you using PPPoE or straight DHCP?

Does the modem have a built in router (more than one ethernet port), what model DSL modem is it?
