Hi All: I am stumped - can anyone help or perhaps direct me toward a list that could? (I have not tried Mac-L yet...)
I have an iMac G5 (1.8 ghz, 320 mb, 2 gb - 10.4.11) and a G3 laptop (500/20/78 - 3 10.4.11) both connected to the internet via ethernet and a GNet router/modem. Both run current updates of Firefox and Safari. The iMac usually has Skype open all the time. About a month ago I had my friendly neighbourhood Apple reseller (who works from his home) install a bigger HD into my iMac. Last week, I noticed a volume error (something like an invalid file structure) which Disk Repair could not repair and I had to completely Erase and Replace my desktop HD with a bootable copy via Super Duper. ( I called my guy and he said it was not the HD but a system software error. A couple of days ago, I noticed that the iMac was not connecting via ftp to my website and really stalling on downloading other sites. So I started to investigate and realized that it's connection speeds are consistently at around 400 - 700 (with uploads at around 500 -750). After troubleshooting further (for hours of course) I realized that the laptop meanwhile (with exact same internet/firewall settings and using either ethernet cable) has no problems downloading at 4,500 kps! I ended up taking it into my friendly neighbourhood Apple guy as I thought the answer lay with the ethernet port in the iMac. He tested the ping for various sites and the download speeds using speedtest.net. He checked the Fire wall and file sharing settings, turning these options off and then back on. He added DNS server addresses to the connection config. The machine connects BEAUTIFULLY for him using ethernet or wirelessly (which I had him install while I was there). I took it home. Back to downloading at 450! (650 if I close Skype.) Here are the facts: - Same set ups on both machines: Firewall On on both machines + file sharing and printer sharing and "Drop Copy" allowed. - open DNS addresses now entered into iMac - not into laptop - Skype and Fetch both closed on iMac. - Same results using either Firefox or Safari. Laptop downloads up to 10x faster. However, I thought I would Verify the iMac Disk again - and now it is showing an Invalid "node" structure which needs to be repaired. Disk Utility can't repair. (I guess I better invest in Disk Warrior but I have never had a disk problem before now....) So, Disk Repair is probably a red herring - but I can't think what is causing this and why the machine would work on his desk and not on mine when my laptop does work on mine. (BTW, do you think these new and consistent volume problems are related to the new HD if not to the internet problems?) Help! (Please!)
