Chris,,

While we are abusing you again, I have a dummie question. I just ran Verify Disk in Disk Utility and got this report"

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
 %)
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Incorrect number of Extended Attributes
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
d.",1)
Macintosh HD
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
        Volume needs repair

I've never tried to repair anything since going to OSX, and I'm reluctant to mess with something that ain't broke in any way that I can notice. It appears that my problem is "incorrect number of Extended Attributes."

I don't even know what an extended attribute is. Is it serious? Should I boot off of the install disk and repair? Is there any way to screw that up?

Thanks.

But the computer is hanging.

1) How do I get it to stop hanging?

Boot off the install disk, run Disk Utility (in the Utilities menu), verify the disk. I'm not going to be surprised to find that the disk already has problems.

2) Can I copy some or all of this User folder onto the internal drive
once I get it to stop hanging?

After doing a fresh install of OS X, the first thing it does is ask if you want to move data from another install. That utility can move all the user data off the external drive to the internal. You can run that util at any time, Applications -> Utilities -> Migration Assistant
