The .cwk extension is likely AppleWorks 6.x. AW can save in .rtf, which 
NeoOffice opens without a problem; it chokes on the same file in .cwk 
format. (Can't say as I blame the student... my choice for word 
processing is still Word 5.1a -- can't stand the Word in Office X, and 
I'm not upgrading to the later versions. NeoOffice can save in .doc and 
.docx.

It works on my 2002 QuickSilver G4 (OS X 10.4.11) and a G3 iBook. Doesn't 
cost anything to try...
