I didn't follow the complete thread, but HTML rendering often takes even more memory, firefox with one page open == 72MB. Same page opened in Preview, 13MB Now, I am not saying that HTML is always bigger then PDF, but HTML browsers do with memory what cookie monster does with cookies. Take as much as you can, as fast as you can. I have yet to come across a browser take consumes the amouth of memory the page really is,t thus text +images.
