Because of my deplorable inclination towards group think ;): Trying to figure things out I read up on IRC logs on the issue, and my post reported the gist - I think it was about modbus, see http://linuxcnc.mah.priv.at/irc/%23emc-devel/2010-05-23.html#04:02:38 see also today's chat: http://linuxcnc.mah.priv.at/irc/%23linuxcnc-devel/2012-08-08.html#13:11:15 > Can't we just ship the library? I'm > not sure, but I would think we could even ship the source of the library > (after all, the GPL's require that we provide source). Well in fact, the library is part of the Ubuntu repo, starting with precise: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zeromq/ and there is a ppa for 10.04, so there wouldnt be a need to "ship it" or "copy the source" - AFACIT it is a external shared library reference, period An interesting question to ask is: does 'present in the ubuntu repo' translate into 'can be made a prerequisite for a Linuxcnc install' - that I have no answer to It could be very well that the community opinion, including mine, on the licensing issue is completely off base. Let me give an example why I think so: - the Zeromq code examples page lists a Nagios plugin: http://www.zeromq.org/code:_start (btw written by Pieter Hintjens, the project lead) - I downloaded the nagios source code, and the toplevel LICENSE file says: GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 2, June 1991 NB: no lesser, no 'or later', no nothing. The question is: how is this in any way different from the LinuxCNC use case? I dont see any such difference. It could well be I asked the wrong question, and assumed 'referring to a library' IS copying. > "Copy code" should only apply if we take all or some of the source and > modify it. that would not be the intent, in fact I'd try to avoid that unless pointed at with a gun -m > > [I have to admit, I have NOT read the details of the various licenses in > a long time, so I might be all wet.] > > Ken >> >> >> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ >> Live Security Virtual Conference >> Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and >> threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond.
