Dave (and Michael et al.):

By now you've probably already built it yourself but...

32-bit:

I had no trouble building simulator versions from master (pulled after
Michael made his adjustments to satisfy the BuildBots) on 32-bit Ubuntu
10.04LTS with either the LiveCD's kernel (2.6.32-122-rtai) or a non-RTAI
kernel (2.6.32-42-generic-pae). This was running on an ASUS AT5NM10-I
motherboard (thumbnail sketch of same is in the latency test results on
the Wiki).

- The build succeeded with no more than the usual warnings. I did notice
an increase in message traffic due to redis.

- Michaels userspace parport seems to be working (at least the demo
signal.hal does what it claims to do_ but I haven't yet pushed any
pulses out to a drive.

- the LinuxCNC simulator seems to be working. (and I notice the redis
server is starting.)

64-bit:

I just built a simulator from master (pulled early today) on 64-bit
Debian Wheezy running on this same motherboard. The kernel is
3.2.0-3-amd64. No RTAI, no PREEMPT_RT.

- same measure of success with the build.

- same measure of success with Michael's userspace parport.

- However, the LinuxCNC simulator fails to start sim/axis_mm. It hangs
after emitting the following console messages

---snip---
LINUXCNC - 2.6.0~pre
Machine configuration directory is
'/home/kreed/linuxcnc-master-sim/configs/sim/axis'
Machine configuration file is 'axis_mm.ini'
Starting LinuxCNC...
redis server started as: 'redis-server', logging to: /dev/null
io started
halcmd loadusr io started
task pid=3569
emcTaskInit: using builtin interpreter
---snip---

It shuts down cleanly if I fire a ctrl-c into it.

I expect I'll see the error of my ways in the morning with the aid of
some coffee and sunshine.

Why Debian Wheezy? Because I'm also setting up to play on this
motherboard with the PREEMPT_RT work of Charles Steinkuehler, et al.
Earlier in the week I successfully built LinuxCNC on a Debian Wheezy
with the 32-bit 686-rt kernel following Charles' Wiki HowTo, but I'm now
converting it over to the 64-bit kernel.

Regards,
Kent
