Yes, daylight and coffee illuminated the problem. Debian Wheezy installs Gnome 3 by default. Explicitly dropping back to "Gnome Classic" when starting the session was all I needed to get the LinuxCNC simulator to run properly on Debian Wheezy. If only all my problems were this simple to solve.
