While I think it's a lot of work for little real gain, I'm certainly not 
against 
that suggestion. If the dev community supports removing all those extra pins 
and having a component replace them,I will take a stab at that patch.
It will break all the user's configs of course, but now would be the time to
do it before 2.6 is released.
