i teach this way...
on & off is like a band saw blade
the teeth per inch is speed (F)
the width of tooth is roughness (On)
the space between is chip clearance (Off)
the height of tooth is bite size, suited to size of work (Ipeak)
the dirt and shape influence offtime (D%)

i agree that some of edm is art, well craft-sy anyway
but very little art is needed to get started

and the good student builds his/her picture of how & why it works
and continually tests that picture every cut.
the student teaches himself by being sensitive to the process
the teacher is the process, not me
