Well, I don't know what I am doing wrong, but there definitely is something.

This is a Dell Optiplex 7010 system with Intel i3 CPU. I just reloaded the whole system with the
iso file I downloaded in April. It shows the kernel as :

3.4-9-rtai-686-pae #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 3.4.55 LinuxCNC i686

The above is a bit confusing - rtai OR preempt? I didn't think it could be both. Anyway, when I start LinuxCNC with a Pico Systems PWM controller, I get nasty messages
and system hangs. One of them came up on dmesg as :

watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu 1

Which sounds pretty serious.

This is just running a sample config for the univpwmv with the only change to the parport address.

I was expecting just a plain preempt kernel, not rtai. Do I have to download wheezy and install the
preempt kernel, and then install LinuxCNC?

Thanks,

Jon
