Rod I feel your frustration. It's a common problem with the linuxcnc project and one of the reasons machinekit came along. I was not suggesting reverse run be abandoned. I am saying if it's added then we need to wait at least 4-6 months before releasing to shake out bugs. While I understand you guys have been putting it through the paces - I bet you haven't tried it with lathes or other weird machines. No configuration wizards/screens have been updated (if required) etc It all takes time. Reverse run is not even in master yet - so how could we release it? If we make a 2.8 stabilization branch right now then master is open to merge reverse run, python 3 work, state tags etc. And hopefully we won't wait three years to release again...
Your frustration really comes from the slow release cycle and difficult-to-make-happen merge process. IMHO this comes from a lack of developers with push access, no clear roadmap/merge criteria for linuxcnc and no clear leader. It's particularly worse right now as 3 of the main developers (with push access) have step back to do other things. We have relied heavily on these fellas to 'do the work' for releases and i guess it's time for others to get in the game. And it seems that is happening. I hope it continues to be an open process. as an aside i have enjoyed reading about your guys work with plasma, I feel you guys have really added capability to linuxcnc, both on the software/hardware side and maybe even more importantly on the forum helping others and working out ideas. I hate to see you guys distracted by these type of frustrations . It was a great shame that the project got splintered between linuxcnc and machinekit for most of the same reasons. ( and i would love to see them get back together again in the future.) Rene tried to Commit Reverse Run in November 2018 and announced that on the forum thread Phill started about his repo https://forum.linuxcnc.org/plasma-laser/35449-another-plasma-component?start=40#120142 Then Rene had to revert. So Phill worked though every commit and merged it into his repo where its been tested in the real world and kept it current ever since. Now all of a sudden its pushed to one side becasue a couple in the dev team don't know enough about it. If it was good enough back in November, shouldn't it be good enough now particularly after it been tested on live machines? I find it incredibly frustrating to find road blocks that can be resolved by merging existing branches that have sat languisihing for several years and have then become broken because of inactivity. To my mind its not treating the contributors respectfully and its no wonder they become disillusioned and move away. New developers like Phill and Randy need to be welcomed with open arms, but more importantly be shown respect for their work by committing it. If you don't, then the project is likely to wither away due dwindling developers.
