Last time I checked, which was very, very long ago, Machinekit had not
replaced the NML system used to communicate between the LinuxCNC GUIs and
the machine controller, they had just wrapped it in a new software layer.

Did they get rid of NML and make their new wrapper be the whole thing?

They replaced MANY of the functions with 0mq, but last I heard (also quite a while ago) it was not complete, so some of NML was still there. The MachineKit web site has certainly been updated recently. Also, there is some traffic on their forum. The Github is marked as "archived" and no pull requests will be accepted. That is a pretty bad sign, unless they
have moved development somewhere else.
