Thanks Seb, missing a bunch of build dependencies... trying to
multi-task and make parts at the same time so I get distracted and
forget the stuff I should know by heart now.

configure error could not link test program to Python... Maybe the
main Python library has been installed in some non-standard library
path.
Python 3 came installed with Debian 12...
Do you have all the 2.9 build dependencies installed? Check with:
$ debian/configure
$ dpkg-checkbuilddeps
