Many small drives for that current rating are designed around the Allegro 3977, which is a single chip driver with an integrated translator. It can handle up to 2.5 Amps at 35V with appropriate heatsinking. If you really want to roll your own you can download the spec sheet from www.allegromicro.com but the last time I googled "allegro 3977" at least one kit supplier came up. If I remember correctly they also sold bare PCBs.
Any 3977 based product should work with EMC. Xylotex makes drives based around the 3977 but they have discontinued their single channel unit in favor of a 3 and 4 channel units. I've got a machine with a Xylotex 3-channel drive that runs fine with EMC, but I think I had to do something with the pinout. It's been a while but I think I had to swap some pins around. I hope that helps!
