Um, yep but you've got to understand that Jon and Dave are talking only about the software on a properly installed PC. There is a whole class of "operator" error that they are not speaking to. That error is the notion that the end user knows how to make it work better than the author or integrator. Let me describe this guy a bit more in the next paragraph. But first let me describe who he is not. He's not like most any one of us here. We all experiment with installs and stretch the boundaries of the code. We do it knowing that we will make mistakes. When we start a new system we test it and when we first run with a real machine our hands hover over the big red button or the disconnect handle. The guy I'm thinking of considers himself a master of computing. Hell he's got a history of crashes and reinstalls that goes back ten/fifteen years. In his thinking some of the big software companies ought to recognize him with a lifetime achievement award. I had one just the other day. He bought a $10k machine and wanted to wifi it. His plan was to wipe the HD and install U7.10. He wanted the latest and wifi was his excuse. I didn't even leave room in the control box for a pci or pcmcia wifi card so I don't know how he was going to do it with hardware that would not be recognized by U6.06. And for that matter, the workshop Mazak has been wifi'd since we started playing with it three years ago. I think you get my meaning. There are times when a totally locked down system would seem to be attractive. After all how long has it been since someone with a working Mazak, Mitts, Siemens, Fagor or Fanuc control (my appologies to those that didn't make my list) control and wanted to replace the software on it just because he thought he knew better than its maker.
