Vince did away with the encoder chip and wired eight Hall sensors and
output wires to a PLC. The only down side is that four more wires need
to be routed. I used HAL components to decode my 4 bit turret position
so you would save on the decoder with the four extra wires. You could
save a bunch of wires with a PIC and SPI link mounted in the carriage to
handle the turret and limit functions.
