I have had a chance to play with my washing machine motor: http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/wash_motor/
I hooked up one of my VFD's to it, without much success. I kept getting thermal alarms. The motor rotates as expected, but I think there is very little back EMF, so the currents are fairly high. My VFD is rated for 220 VAC output, the motor is rated for 110 VAC. At slow speeds, the average output voltage is less than 50 Volts, so I felt the test was safe enough, it just didn't work within the VFD's parameters. It's beginning to look like I'll need to be a little more discriminating in matching this motor to a driver. If someone has a driver that runs this type of motor well, I would appreciate hearing about it. Another interesting feature is that the label indicates a 16k RPM rating. It will be interesting to figure out where this motor might be useful for CNC. -- Kirk Wallace http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/ http://www.wallacecompany.com/E45/index.html California, USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stay on top of everything new and different, both inside and around Java (TM) technology - register by April 22, and save $200 on the JavaOne (SM) conference, June 2-5, 2009, San Francisco. 300 plus technical and hands-on sessions.
