That's a very good point, there are many breakout boards out there that
still use components designed in the 70's.

"Opto isolated" boards seem to suffer most. Earlier this year I tried a
new design breakout board that looked promising, until I tested it. The
opto's were not reliable at anything over 10kHz, and the board wasn't
even isolated !

When pointed out to the manufacturer, the reply was ---- silence!. 

I shouldn't have been surprised, as there are several well known and
popular boards that use CNY75's that run a few kHz, rather than
something like NEC PS91xx series that will do 10MHz!!
