Thanks everyone - Richard got the right answer - its Grub2. Unfortunately, it seems to be more difficult to set up than the web pages suggest - e.g. Startup Manager which I have just installed, only has half the options the webpage says it should have!! Too late to worry about it tonight though - I have to be up at 5 in the morning to take part in a brass band contest......
