Yes, the difference of the areas creates the multiplication effect. I think that use of air is problematic, because it is very compressible. What I have seen and encountered is that ONLY oil is used in these pumps. Although for my next waterjet machine I would like to have direct drive pump (aka crankshaft driven pump). I think that it would be better - no warming up of the oil, not that noisy, less fluctuations in water pressure. I have no proof, but people say that they are easier for maintenance operations and they are cheaper to run. The biggest drawback is inability to get very low water pressure, which I use for piercing brittle materials. 2010/9/10 Ian W.
