And now we've come full circle. The original NIST effort was to develop
exactly the kind of integrated factory environment implied by Stuart's
"management application above EMC2 to hand the synchronization of
discrete EMC2 processes" but across entire enterprises.

Under Jim Albus's leadership, folks* at NIST developed the
multi-platform Realtime Control Sytem (RCS) for factory automation.
Computers, workcells, etc., speaking the Neutral Messaging Language
(NML) were connected via the Communication Management System (CMS).
EMC/EMC2 implements a portion of this technology in its bowels.

(You can look all this stuff up via Google, Wikipedia, or the NIST
archives.)

I agree with Stuart's analysis that the processes discussed seem not to
need real time response, but I don't think the original poster has ever
spelling out just what his multi-station system has to accomplish.

Regards,
Kent

*full disclosure: I never worked on factory automation but my group at
NIST received some support from the program because we were engaged in
the development of IGES and STEP for an allied industrial sector.
