No, it requires an encoder with an index pulse on the spindle.  EMC2 can 
do this with any
reversible drive on the spindle.  It is best to have a spindle drive 
with speed control, so the speed of the
spindle can be ramped down and then back up at the reversal.  This makes 
it easier for the X
axis to follow the in-out motion when the spindle is reversed.

I have non-servo drives on both of my machines, doing rigid tapping.
