Well, easy enough to test that out, if the machine is on the network.
I often start up some of my EMC systems that normally have a video monitor,
but with the monitor turned off because I am going to be doing system work
from my desktop.  None of them seem to mind this setup.  They will have the
keyboard and mouse connected as usual, though.  There are some BIOSes
that will hang if they don't detect a keyboard, but that can usually be 
disabled
with a setting.

This all applies to the Ubuntu variants that come with the EMC2 distros,
and maybe those have different startup or configuration settings.  I don't
even know what "Ubuntu desktop edition" is.

I have a feeling this might apply to DVI graphic cards, which have more
complicated protocol between monitor and PC, mostly due to digital
rights management CRAP.
