Speaking of screen brightness, I have noticed that some of my Ubuntu PC's will transparent gray the screen when the processor can't keep up. I think during the install, Ubuntu senses the type of video driver it _wants_ and adds object stretch and shading, and screen graying if the driver supports it. It may be worth while to turn this fancy-pants stuff off. It may also indicate that the processor is maxed out most of the time.
