Windows allows this, and it is sometimes quite useful. You can also make a copy of a file before opening it, or move it to a new location. Apple don't allow this, as far as I can tell. I am not sure if the normal file-open dialog in Ubuntu allows this, but the one that Axis uses is very minimalist.
