One of my favorite features is the fact that LinuxCNC is Free Open
Source Software, but that probably won't impress a lot of people as it
does me, so I'll skip the religion and stick to the more pragmatic
reasons for LinuxCNC.

LinuxCNC is suitable to almost every application and skill level. If you
bought a new machine from companies such as Sherline or Smithy, there is
a configuration ready for you to use. If you have a typical machine
(milling machine or lathe, servo or stepper driven) there is a generic
configuration that will require only slight modifications to adapt it to
your specific application (steps per inch, etc.) If you've designed and
build some wacky machine tool - a 5 axis plasma cutter with automated
infeed & outfeed and a frothy beer dispenser nozzle - then you can go
full custom. At every level there are tools appropriate to the task, and
at every level the tools are now pretty close to being the easiest
possible way of doing the job.

There is great 3rd party hardware support for various CNC and I/O
solutions. Hi Pete! Hi Jon! Etc.

There is great community support available on this list, the forum,
etc. Considering how problematic it can be when you've done the
proprietary software dance, invested greatly of your time and money, and
everything is finished except one outstanding and insurmountable hurdle
and the software vendor is no help at all, this one aspect of LinuxCNC
could easily be the only selling point you need. With LinuxCNC, nobody
is ever single sourced for a solution, and you won't find yourself
hopelessly painted into a technological corner with no path for escape.

LinuxCNC is new & improved, lemon scented, now with 35% more product for
the same price, under new management, no embarrassing stains or
unsightly wrinkles, guaranteed or your money back, your mileage may
vary, some restrictions apply, void where prohibited by law.
