At least, that's what I think is going on. A lot of BeagleBoard/BeagleBone users also report corrupted file systems on SD cards using EXT4, and when they back off to EXT3, no more problems. I have some embedded devices with Beagle Boards in them that are usually shut down by just switching the system off ungracefully, and had the same problem just a couple of times. Now, on EXT3 all seems OK. I can't explain it, but my experience seems to mirror the reported problems.
