I'd expect that once a machine is configured, there should be a home
position that is fixed and always gone to via a safe path. Retract the
tool fully, zip over to Home and zero everything.

Then other zeroing functions would be temporary, with the ability to
save them as origin points for repeat jobs, and the software should have
the ability to go Home then back to the job based off the temporary origin.

With such a setup there could be a touch off gauge at Home so a manual
tool change would bring the machine to a safe condition for the operator
to change tools then poke a button to indicate the change is done. Zip
to Home, touch off then back to the job to use the tool.

Once a machine is configured, the operator shouldn't ever have to be
mucking about behind the scenes of the software or fiddling with
settings or having to shut down and restart the software to make it
change modes. Boot the thing and it should be capable at once of doing
every function the machine can do.
