Pretty much yes, except that board widths will randomly change from 80 to
300 mm and AFAIK none of the existing solutions can handle that. All of
them have to be set up for particular width, but they cannot adapt "on fly"
and it is very difficult to rebuild them so that they could do so, that is
why I think that building such a thing from scratch is easier. But since I
feel stronger in mechanics, I had difficulties coming up with some way, how
to manage measuring boards and repositioning the motor.

So it seems that lever with an encoder at pivot point and hydraulic door
damper will have to handle the measuring part.
