Instead of driving the boards on their edges, drive on the broad surface
with rollers like a surface planer. To auto adjust for thickness and
have two rollers synchronized is a simple mechanism.

Directly drive the fixed roller then from its other end run a chain to a
double sprocket, then from the other half of the double sprocket to the
second roller. Arrange the two chains in a V with the double sprocket in
line with the pivot axis of the frame the second roller is mounted on.

Springs or a a hydraulic door closer allow for automatic adjusting and
holding pressure.

If you must edge drive the boards, the same arrangement of chains would
work. Use a smooth piece of stainless steel or UHMW for the boards to
push the adjuster roller out.

Combine this with a spring loaded pressure roller on the edge opposite
the cutting head and you've an all mechanical system you can stuff
boards through forever.

Adjusting for width by moving the cutter and motor is just needless
complexity.
