A few questions, on setting up a network connection and static IP

1. Should I use the Network Manager GUI, or should I modify the the
/etc/network/interface file thru the terminal?

2. I have tried both of the above, and cannot get anything to come up
under eth0 on the printout of /sbin/config -a. I looked at my test
machine in my office, and that printout shows the eth0. Should I delete
the Network manager utility, I see issues where one interferes with the
other?

3. If I plug a network cable into the Ethernet port on the MB, shouldn't
it recognize it's connected, and start working on its own?
I pulled the board out, went in the office, threw together
a PS, and peripherals, and it will not do anything network wise when
plugging it into our network.

Here I go again, climbing another almost vertical learning curve.
