If someone would give me some quick instructions how best to get the dmesq log 
of the sserial errors, I'll gladly do it.  (I'm not the most fluent Linux 
user.)

Can you post a dmesg log of the sserial errors?

AFAIK the only change is that 2.7 has more complete error reporting


(the firmware changes on the 5I25 and 7I77 are just bug fixes)
