Ah, no drawing film in the bottom desk drawer, then. I don't know how
long the sheets of clear plastic "cafe curtain" plastic would endure
with oil spatter. Here they are used to temporarily shield al fresco
diners in semi-outdoor areas, then rolled up when the weather improves.
That stuff would be maybe a third of a mm thick, or 0.012"-ish, I'm
guessing. It feels pretty heavy.

A quick improvisation to get under way again might be to stick the bars
to a length of "Contact". Do they still make that brand of self-adhesive
plastic sheet for covering work surfaces and books? That would allow
more time to find a more permanent film.

Quicker still: Some overlapping runs of duct tape would serve for "proof
of concept" while more permanent film is sourced. (I'm pretty sure the
duct tape would come unstuck after a while, so it's only a short-term
work-around.)
