The difference in battery performance is likely because of a difference in charging history.
The batteries are also different. Maybe made on different days or on different assembly lines As for getting salt to your water softener. Seems like the exact same problem they used to have with coal heating. Then they invented the "coal shoot" But you are not handling loose salt. Ages ago I used to work at a fast food place.
