5th is the cable shield. no connection at the motor. Could drop a
connection if 3 phase as they are hooked up delta,

And I've been touring ebay. It seem there are now 3 or 4 better ways to
do it than plain 2 phase steppers.

Next up pricewise are 3 phase, w/o encoders so 6 or so NM at a swag of
$150/axis for motor and driver. No builtin corrections if they lose a
step.

Next up is still a 2 phase motor but 1000 ppr encoder equipt, making them
capable of catchups if they lose a step. Resembles a servo driven by
step/dir. Starts at 200$, about 250 for 6NM.

Last and priciest is 3 phase with encoders which could be treated as
servo's driven by step/dir signals. They start at around $250 but might
be able to do the job with fewer NM's.

1600oz/in on the Sheldon now is criminally serious overkill, with the
latter I could probably run its Z with a 3NM nema 23, nominally 1/4 of
what's turning the screw now. This latter doesn't seem to have a price
premium if the NM's are down sized.

You folks would choose? Worst surprise is the shipping, $65 or so.
