While all of this talk of laser measurement is interesting. I'm not sure it's the best solution for the application in question. Isn't the task at hand simply finding the length of the end of the uncut stock on a chop saw pusher? If so, wouldn't a simple prox switch embedded in the table or fence a known distance from the blade be sufficient? If non-metalic stock undetectable by a prox switch is to be cut, then use a simple eye and light beam sensor. Then use an ordinary G38 probe cycle to find the end of the stock. How precise does the length estimation of the uncut stock really need to be? Most of the time I would never trust the rough end cuts of linear stock to be true and would want to make a cleanup cut on the end any way. After that clean up cut the precise length of the rest of the piece on the pusher is known.
