There are a few differences. 1. Genlist items have a much shorter life-span than the things you described above. Which means any issues are much less likely to occur. 2. I'm not particularly fond of the functions above as well. 3. Two wrongs don't make a right, we have done mistakes in the past, no reason to blindly repeat them. As for the one I added: I added it after I got sick of exposing functions all the way between textblock and elementary through edje.
