There are a few differences.
1. Genlist items have a much shorter life-span than the things you
described above. Which means any issues are much less likely to occur.
-> Genlist users know (or must know) that fact. so it doesn't matter. and this
api is not for only genlist.

2. I'm not particularly fond of the functions above as well.
-> Me neither. but the basic rule is not always true. some cases those kind
apis may be more effective/helpful for users.

3. Two wrongs don't make a right, we have done mistakes in the past, no reason
to blindly repeat them.
-> If you can add more correct method to replace them, then i agree they are
wrongs. but you couldn't and nobody did yet. so I belive those APIs are not all
fault.

As for the one I added: I added it after I got sick of exposing
functions all the way between textblock and elementary through edje.
Maybe someone should have stopped me then.

-> Consequetly, what happened? apps are dead because of the entry? developers
are unhappy because of it? consequently both are happy.
if you should bind all the textblocks stuff for the entry, why didn't u do it?
and actually in that case that was obivous proper solution exist. acutally we
should do it. but the API I added, it doesn't yet.
