Pure E here, with only xfrun4 bound to alt+f2 for quick launches. For apps, I try to 
stay clear of Qt based apps.

as for the keyboard, you can change it using X itself. Look at how I've configured it:

    Option "XkbRules"   "xfree86"
    Option "XkbModel"   "pc104"
    Option "XkbLayout"  "us,bg"
    Option "XkbVariant" ",phonetic"
    Option "XkbOptions" "grp:ctrl_shift_toggle,lv3:win_switch,grp_led:scroll"

that changes the keyboard with the ctrl+shift combo, and indicates it by lighting the 
scroll led on the keyboard.
