Make sure you have the Preview pane option selected, and the "mark message as read when displayed in the Preview pane" preference selected. Go into a folder with multiple unread messages and use the down arrow to read the next message. If you hit the down arrow fast enough some messages are not opened in the preview window and therefore are left as unread. I didn't notice this in Entourage 2001 (on the same computer). I very rarely use the spacebar option to do this as it also seems much slower in Entourage X than 2001.
